Speed

This semester I’m taking a photojournalism class and we had a project to shoot a story or a photo essay I was having a hard time finding something to shoot for this project so I sat down with Jim Fisher one day in the photo office at the Chronicle and he helped me find my idea.

So I’m a big hockey fan and in speaking to other hockey fans we agreed that one thing that makes hockey great was the speed of the game. So I decided to shoot hockey with a slow shutter to show how fast hockey is.

It proved to be hard to shoot but I got better the more I shot with a slow shutter. In the end it turned out well. Go ahead and judge for yourself.

Get ready for some football!!!

Ok like always I’ve been meaning to do a post but I’ve put it off and put it off well now is the time for a football post and instead of doing a lot of little ones I will do one big one with all the football games I have shot so far.

My first game was the Utes first home game against Air Force, there was some serious questions surrounding the Utes after we lost Johnson and Asiata in the Oregon State game but it I was still excited about my first game. At first I was a little too excited I was just shooting everything and not thinking it through. As the game went on I got settled in and started to shoot better. I got a few good shots.

The Utes were inches away from tying the game but could not get through the Air Force line to score it was a disappointing end.

I was offered the chance to shoot the game against UCLA but thought they will get their asses kicked and I need to watch a game from The MUSS so I declined the offer, HOW STUPID!?!?!

So the next game I shoot was against UNLV in fabulous Las Vegas. This game I started to find my zone and really did better than against Air Force wish the same could be said for the Utes but whatever.

The MUSS came down to Vegas and so we had Swoop the cheerleaders and the band it was almost like a home game. As I said I had a big improvement during this game and I got a sweet shot of a sack from Martail Burnett.

After the game in fabulous Las Vegas I shot the Utes vs. Utah State in snow socked Salt Lake City. Despite the snow and the rain a number of hardcore Ute fans took off their shirts and painted their stomachs.

It was hard to shoot with bags on my cameras but I managed to get some really good shots If I do say so myself.

I was happy with the stuff I got when I looked over them at the office, but on Sunday morning I felt even better about my stuff when I looked in the Trib and saw Trent’s picture it looked really familiar so I pulled up my shoots an saw this one.

It was the same moment Trent had captured the only difference is that Trent was 10 or 15 yards up the line so it had less of the feet on the bottom right which is why I’m still learning but it makes me feel like I’m doing something right when a I can get a shot that is similar to a picture from a great photographer like Trent.

Ok this post is getting kind of long but this is the last game I have to write about so let’s get this over with. This time the Utes took on San Diego State and the weather was much improved. The Utes looked good again in their win over San Diego State and again I got some good shots as I continue to improve. My one of my favorite shots was when the Utes ran a fake field goal and Louie Sakoda threw a pass to Bradon Godfrey. I could see why Louie is a kicker to be fair he is a AWESOME kicker.

Like in the Utah State game I had a picture that was the same moment as one that was in the Trib on Sunday this time it was one of Rick's pictures. Rick and I that were sitting on the side of the end zone and we were hopping the play would come our way and it did.I got that shot with a 75 mm the smallest lens I had out and I loved it. Rick had a wide angel that looked great to but it was the same moment so at least I know my timing is as good as Trent’s and Rick now I just need to improve in my other areas.

More News

So these are kinda old but I think they are worth the wait.

The first news assignment i want to talk about is a police training that took place in OSH it was scheduled to start at 10 and go until 2. So just before 10 me and Ana went over to OSH but saw no one but the janitors so we waited and waited killed some time by having some fun after about an hour and a half the police showed up. I think they had some classroom training before they came to OSH. Well once they came they went through some dry runs with their fingers drawn.

After that they got out their air soft guns and started the shooting. I got some good shots I feel I and as it went on I started to get the pattern of the training so it got easier to shoot because I could predict what they were going to do. My best shot came from me lying on the stairs so that I was in front of them and then lowered my camera as low as I could get it so I was shooting up towards their faces as they moved down the stairs. One of the patters that developed was they would talk about how the run went after they finished so we had some down time that Ana took advantage of by doing her own drill.

The next shoot was not as exciting I just want some input from everyone about this photo. The story was ASUU was limited in their rule book that they could only give $5,000 to student groups but last year they gave Crimson Nights like $50,000. So they were debating on whether or not to make an exception to the rule they debated for about an hour and this picture show how I was feeling during the meeting.







So I thought I had a few options for my shot I could do a speaker shot a very attractive option, but I was not going to use one of them. I could do a shot of a representative reading over the details about the issues. Or the third option a shot of the vote.Or this option after some of the first proposals for giving them $20,000 of $15,000 were shot down I watched some of the reactions and on the last proposals of $8,000 failed Tanya Tapp, associate director of operations for Crimson Nights, looked to the sky in disappointment. This is the photo I chose to use because I was editing that night but I want to get some other thoughts.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

I have been sitting on these pictures for a while because there has just been too much work for me to post but I’m in class and don’t really want to focus on the class work because I was up till 1 writing a paper for this class I need a break so a long overdue post is in order:)

I have always known that breaking news was part my job but I just had not done anything breaking. Until the other week, I was out driving all over looking for a Dave Buhler yard sign for a illustration Lennie was working on. I finally found one and got back in to the office and Lennie said do you know where Steiner is. I did not have time to make sure I was thinking of the right place before Jim Fisher was in the office saying “Come on Tyler this is breaking news get moving!” I garbed my camera and my flash, and was out the door as fast as I could go. Anna filled me in on the car ride over. They had ammonia leak and had evacuated an entire block.

Once we there we found out that it was at the end of the leek and they were almost had it all cleaned up. So but I was there to get county officials being briefed by one of the firefighters. Then we went up to the building because it was safe. So I was shooting the firefighters cleaning up their stuff when the wind kicked up and made it hard to shoot but I still got some stuff.

After the wind had died down a bit I was trying to find Anna but I could not find her then she called and so had found a guy that was going to give us a ride back to my car because it was raining now and the car was far away.

Only a few days later I took an assignment to shoot a woman’s self defense seminar I was shooting it not getting much when my phone rang and it was Dustin our news editor telling me that Trax had hit a car over a by Rice-Eccles Stadium so I left the class and ran over to the accident. It was a bad accident the train had hit the car right on the driver’s side of the car.After having a problem dealing with the firefighters I was not getting much so I left to go edit my pictures at the office. This was an exciting experience that I enjoyed because no one was seriously hurt in ether event.

Back to school, back to work, back to massive blog posts!

This semester I get to take the great, supper fun class Mass Comm Law, and boy is it fun. In addition I have three other class and two jobs so keeping up on the post have been hard so I’m going to write on four assignments I enjoyed the last few weeks.

First up a frat house reopening, The Phi Delta Theta house began the steps to reestablish themselves at the U they hosted a BBQ during rush week and I wanted the shot of the BBQ to work but the dead space between the Phi Delts sign and the flam was too big for it to work.
Thankfully one of the alumni shared an old copy of the U’s yearbook with the recruits and gave me a useable shot.

Next I shot the Real Salt Lake Game the next night and this was the fastest soccer game I have seen. In most games the first goal is the end of the game because it’s soccer so there was a goal in only 40 seconds it was so crazy I almost missed it.

I shot this Real game with one of our new photographers Jarad Reddekopp. What can I say about Jarad? Um, well he is Jarad.

He has no style look at that ugly yellow vest what the hell was he thinking when he put that on in the morning?;)

During some of the down time in the game I was crowd watching to see what I could see and I found this shirt that made me laugh. I also found a HUGE MULLET but the photos i took did not do it justice.

Oh and I got some good action.The election is approaching so I got to do two candidates the first was U political science professor Luke Garrott he is running for city council and I went door to door with him and one of his volunteers it was quite interesting to be on the other side of the door and see the entire range of responses.

Spending time with a politician was a refreshing view that they are not always scummy ass holes. Luke was a nice guy and I enjoyed my time with him.

Mayoral candidate Ralph Becker hosted a free showing of the movie “who killed the electric car” and a gathering beforehand. So I shot the gathering but it was in the Broadway theater and I did not have much room to move around so I had a lot of hail marry shots of the group that worked I guess.

I wanted to get the Ralph Becker sign with a crowd and I loved this shot at the time but during editing I lost a lot of my love of it.
